GURDWARA OBJECTIVES - UPDATE

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

The Charity Commission have asked the Gurdwara to update its objectives from the current version, which was registered with them in 1984. This is necessary to be consistent with the sewa being undertaken now through the Gurdwara. Please see below the existing objective, and the proposal to be adopted for the future. This covers all the activities that are undertaken through the Gurdwara. The Special General Meeting on Sunday 29th May 2022 is being held to seek the Sangat’s blessing for the proposed objectives.

EXISTING CHARITY OBJECTIVES (FROM 1984)

The objects of Darbar Sahib shall be to; advance the Sikh religion among the residents of the Area of Benefit by providing and furnishing a place of worship and to relieve poverty among the Sikh Community.

PROPOSED CHARITY OBJECTIVES MAY 2022

The objects of the Darbar Sahib shall be to advance the Sikh religion in accordance with the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib including but not limited to the following:

  1. To hold daily services according to the Sikh Rehat Maryada (Code of Conduct)

  2. Celebrate Gurpurabs (Birth Anniversaries of Gurus and Martyrs and Sikh historical events);

  3. To arrange Amrit Sanchar (Khalsa Initiation Ceremony);

  4. To arrange marriage ceremonies in accordance with the Sikh faith and according to the laws of England and Wales;

  5. To arrange other ceremonies in accordance with the Sikh faith, including final prayers for funerals;

  6. Provide facilities to teach Punjabi, Gurbani and other Sikh literature, and educational facilities for supporting the wider education of all persons;

  7. To organise Sikhi camps regularly;

  8. To organise lectures and discussion forums with distinguished speakers for increasing knowledge of the Sangat;

  9. To raise awareness of the Sangat and wider community of issues impacting on Sikhs worldwide;

  10. Enable other organisations to support the Sangat through use of the Darbar Sahib facilities, including for improving the health and wellbeing of the Sangat;

  11. Encourage Sikhs to participate in active sports by providing and maintaining appropriate facilities through Guru Nanak Sports Club;

  12. To provide aid to charitable and community organisations for the benefit of all, and enable the Sangat to perform Sewa for all, in accordance with the Sikh principle of Sarbat da Bhalla;

  13. To provide support for the elderly through day care and other facilities;

  14. To raise awareness of Sikhi through welcoming visits from schools, public services, business, and other organisations;

  15. Support Sangat participation in national Sikh events;

  16. To develop new services as deemed appropriate by the Trustees and Sangat due to changing needs of the times to support the Sangat and the wider community, ensuring compliance with Sikhi ethos and principles.
