VAISAKHI 2026
VAISAKHI IN GRAVESEND

Gravesend’s Sikh community comes together every year to host one of the most impressive Vaisakhi events in the UK. The celebrations are centred around the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara, one of the largest and most architecturally stunning Gurdwaras in Europe.

One of the highlights of Vaisakhi in Gravesend is the Nagar Kirtan, a religious procession that winds through the streets of the town. It is a vibrant, colourful parade led by Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, carried on a beautifully decorated float. Devotees sing hymns (kirtan), and traditional Sikh martial arts demonstrations, known as Gatka, are performed along the route.
The procession attracts over ten thousand people, including members of the wider community, showcasing the spirit of inclusivity and togetherness. Volunteers set up stalls along the way, distributing free food and drinks (langar) to everyone, a cornerstone of our Sikh faith and Seva (selfless service).

The procession finishes at Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara, where the Dharmic Mela (Fair) continues, where stall holders display products and services. Companies and organisations include local and international businesses, local government representation, Kent Police, Kent Fire & Rescue, a Fun Fair and much more for the whole family!

Vaisakhi in Gravesend is not just a religious festival; it is a celebration of the town’s multicultural identity. People from all walks of life join in the festivities, reflecting the Sikh values of equality and shared humanity. The event fosters a sense of belonging and pride among Gravesend’s residents while educating others about Sikh culture and heritage.
